studying in the new European landscape

The Paul-Verlaine University in Metz started implementing the Bologna process at the beginning of the 2005-2006 academic year. The objective of this new system is to promote and facilitate student mobility in France and in the member countries of the European Higher Education Area. It makes the selection of courses by students much more flexible and gives transparency to the degrees awarded.

The architecture of studies is based on three degrees to be awarded in succession : Bachelor, Master, Doctorate.

Offering multi-disciplinary courses and training

The UPV-M provides tuition for Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in four areas :

  • Science, Technology, Health care
  • Law, Economics, Management
  • Arts, Letters and Languages
  • Humanities and Social Sciences

These courses cover a wide range of specialties and sub-specialties so that students can customise their study plan according to their personal and professional aspirations.

Cross-sectional courses are also offered as part of specific unités d'enseignement (? credit courses) in languages, computer literacy, office automation, methodology, etc.

The "Successful Bachelor's Course" Program

The French Ministry of Higher Education and Research has set up the "Successful Bachelor's Course" accompaniment program designed to reduce dramatically the dropout and failure rate of students right at the beginning of the threeyear course. The UPV-M was selected by the Ministry - together with 15 other French universities - for the promotion of this program and the Bachelor's course offered at the beginning of the 2008-09 academic year was recognised as "exemplary".

This laudatory evaluation was, among other reasons, justified by the general implementation of an innovative approach based on the intervention of "reference teachers", an increase in lecturing time and the promotion of small-group study work.

A scheme to provide customised accompaniment and tutoring has thus been implemented to offer to all students the possibility of developing a personal project and explore the avenues for further studies and better chances on the labour market. The Bachelor's course can then be conceived as :

  • either a multidisciplinary program with bridges between the various courses and the possibility of changing the main line of study ;
  • or a study course with a vocational bend, including, among other things, possible work placements or internships.

An education and training offer supported by research

un_doctorant_a_l_oeuvre_medium.jpgThe Metz students can take full advantage of a first-rate offer of courses based on the very wide range and high quality of the research activities in numerous areas. When entering the second-year of the master's course and launching a research project, students become members of a research team piloted by highly qualified academics.

In numerous cases they will have the opportunity of engaging in doctoral studies in one of the many Research centres and obtain a doctoral degree - the third stage of studies after the bachelor's and the master's degree.

The University offers no less than 30 specialties for doctoral research to students in science, letters, languages, arts and humanities, law, economics, management.

These courses, being rooted in and supported by scientific research and progress, can also benefit from the competent contribution of technical personnel, teaching staff, engineers and laboratory assistants. This continuous exchange and cooperation are key factors for the efficiency and strength of academic education and training.

Work-oriented education and training

formation_en_informatique_medium.jpgThe UPV-M provides work-oriented tuition and training to obtain a diploma in every field of studies and for each type of degree offered :

  • DUT (Diplôme Uuniversitaire de Technologie ? Undergraduate Diploma in Technology - a 2 year-course) : students enrolled in these courses in the scientific and service sector acquire skills facilitating their access to the labour market ;
  • Work-oriented Bachelor's Degrees : the courses offered are designed and developed in partnership with businesses and professionals ;
  • Master's Degrees : work placement is mandatory in the curriculum and courses call to a large extent on expert professionals.

A work-study program - why not ?

The idea is steadily gaining in popularity as it combines paid employment - and therefore the acquisition of work experience - with formal study, as part of an internship or work placement agreement. The UPV-M offers some 30 programs of this type (as part of a DUT, a work-oriented bachelor's course, etc.) in science and the service branch.

The UPV-M is fully aware that the institution is a major economic player and has therefore to adapt and suggest new solutions on the social and economic scene. As proof of that, the university offers no less than 9 such work-oriented bachelor's programs for the 2009-2012 period.

The UPV-M provides tuition and training for :

  • 13 DUTs (Diplôme Universitaire de Technologie) ;
  • 26 Specialist Bachelor's degrees ;
  • 18 Work-oriented Bachelor's degrees, with 34 specialities ;
  • 23 Master's degrees, with 59 specialities ;
  • 30 Doctoral degrees.
